I created this colorful piece with pure imagination and was thrilled with the way it came out. It is such a wonderful time when I tap into the inner self and the painting just flows out, seemingly without effort. Lacking words to describe what I am attempting I will use the words I found in trying to describe abstracted art: Abstraction generally involves implication, suggestion and mystery rather that obvious description. Like a good poem, a good abstraction attacks your feelings before your understanding.

This is a painting done for our Painting with Passion Show.It is another one of my "intuitive" creations where I am working totally reference free and only with what speaks from within. It is a huge challenge for me with years of training where I paint using reference. It is fun and frightening to see what evolves. I am surprised at how I see abstracted figures revealed in many of these works. Of course the joy with the results is having everyone see from their own experiences.

I have had this picture in my files since my trip to China a few years ago. The children there are adored and adorable. This little girl was so entranced while watching the crowds in Tienanmen Square as was I in disbelief that I was actually there. I went to China on a painting/tour trip desiring experiences, viewpoints and visuals different than my own world here. It was that and more and I am so grateful to have made new friends and lasting memories and a plethora of new painting material. I, however will not try painting on location in a new part of the world as there is just too much to take in besides the challenge of dragging painting supplies everywhere and settling down long enough to focus on one spot.

I am pretty sure this is a scene from the Big Thompson Canyon from a photo taken pre digital cameras. I was drawn to the late winter colors when the willows and brush turn some glorious colors right before they pop out their new growth.

I am particularly happy with the way this painting turned out. I have not visited my poppy reference from my European travels in quite awhile so it was fun to relive some wonderful travels and approach a familiar subject with a renewed enthusiasm. The French and Italian poppies are smaller in a deeper red hue than many of ours here at home. It always amazes me to see huge fields lush in red that we came across in the springtime travels in Europe.
This will be my last posting in 2011. I am so excited about the upcoming year at Brushstrokes as we introduce our new gallery partner Kelly Berger, who brings new and exciting ideas and creative energy to our team at Brushstrokes. Stay tuned as Brushstrokes explores a new future in 2012!

It was a perfect day and we timed our arrival at the peak of the changing colors of the Aspen trees. The sun was in and out of the clouds creating a light show of different clumps of aspen showcased in the light as the clouds moved. That is what this scene reflects. Life seems to be amping up, and the days are filled with one activity after another. Is is just me or does the world seem to be moving faster and faster? It was such a gift to find the time to sit quietly and relive this warm and serene scene as I painted it. This fall in Colorado has been so spectacular and we have been blessed with many perfect days that I refer to as "Champagne Days" where the air is crisp, the skies are "Colorado" blue and the colors of the changing leaves are spectacular. I wish it would last forever. But since snow is in the forecast I hope my painting will keep the memory and feelings of these perfect days alive.

One of my themes this past year and currently is reflections.This scene was found on another travel adventure to New England a few years ago and oh, the reflections there! Here is a commission I just finished for a client to go in their new Kauai home. It was such a joy to paint as I am so enamored with painting ocean and boat scenes. Living in Colorado is the best but I do miss the salt air, sound of the surf and luscious colors of the ocean that is missing from the Rocky Mountains!
This painting is 36"x60" and was painted primarily with a palette knife. After all my small daily paintings it was a shock as to how much paint goes into one this size! I love the freedom of doing these large ones.

I am off to Ruidoso, NM where Longcoat Fine Art Gallery is hosting a show for myself and my partners at Brushstrokes. I will be doing a demo during the day on Saturday.

The Rocky Mountain Columbine (our state flower here in Colorado) is so magnificent. If you haven't looked closely, don't miss the amazing detail nature has given this flower with its spurred lavender and white petals contrasted with the bright yellow center. It blooms in our mountain meadows and woodlands from June to August depending on the elevation. Although they grow in gardens I am partial to the wildflowers found in and amongst the delicate Aspen trees here in Colorado. I am so grateful for the amazingly imaginative subjects that nature provides for me to interpret on canvas.

We were relaxing at the end of a hot day of photographing every wildflower in sight. (We were tired as there were flower scenes in every direction one could see and we attempted to capture them all. I have a bird feeder that keeps me (and the squirrels) entertained every day. Although most of the birds are cheery little sparrows, we get a number of Blue Jays landing as well. I love to see them with their perky crest, and beautiful blue, white, and black plumage. Although they can be noisy, Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds.
Lately, it has been a symphony of birdsong in the mornings as though it were spring and our feeder is emptied daily. (A month ago it would hold for a week. Do they know something we don't?)

Although it is spring and too early for sunflowers to be blooming I was drawn to this scene perhaps because of the cheery colors. I rendered it entirely using a small palette knife to give it lots of texture and keep it loose.
I am off to the Texas Hill Country tomorrow for a week. It is Blue Bonnet season and have been told it isn't a banner year but I know I will find some great new inspiration anyway.

Finally, I have some encaustic paintings to show. It took awhile to set up a studio and start experimenting. I did this little painting inspired by a piece I did in a workshop in Texas last January. I stayed with a good friend and fellow artist, Julie, in Boerne, TX who has a Guinea Hen living on her property. She sent me these incredibly beautiful feathers that the unnamed Guinea leaves behind which I have immortalized.
It is a challenge to find time to experiment in the encaustics, abstracts and keep up with my regular painting these days but I love the challenge.
I have a little description of encaustic for those who are wondering what the hec it is!
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.
Encaustic painting was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. Click here for more history

I had started this little guy a month ago and got sidetracked and put him aside. I just found the canvas under a pile of "to do's" that I had forgotten to do!
This is a little piggy photographed in China in a small village where the people raise their livestock practically in their homes. The family must have wondered about our American tour group all excitedly photographing their little piglets as though they had never seen one before! Really, it was a photo opt with the little piglets so beautifully backlit.

I was commissioned to paint a 48x60 abstract mountain scene that didn't have too many bright colors (a challenge for me!) I did almost the entire painting with a large palette knife and one stroke with a huge brush loaded with gobs of paint. This was such fun experimenting with acrylics and the unforgiving palette knife tool.
I can't wait to get back to more experimentation.

I photographed this fellow one Christmas day several years ago at my sister's house in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was a very cold, crisp clear Colorado day and this one was awaiting his turn at the feeder, puffing up his feathers to ward off the cold.
I love the blues of his plumage with the Colorado blue skies.
Some trivia: Blue Jays can make a large variety of sounds,and they may learn to mimic human speech. Blue Jays can also copy the cries of local hawks so well that it is sometimes difficult to tell which it is.

I have really been on a kick for the little birds, a symbol to me of freedom and sweet music. They are so entertaining as they dance around the bird feeder, sometimes not so patiently, waiting their turn.
I love waking up in the Springtime to the symphony of sounds that all the birds are making outside. Some mornings it is so loud that I can't hear the radio which is not a bad thing! I turn off the news and just listen to them trying to distinguish the many different sounds.

What is it that is so romantic about the mighty buffalo? This little Chickadee is titled after the sound these wonderful little birds make. They are wonderful little songbirds and here is a bit of trivia about them: On cold winter nights, these birds reduce their body temperature by up to 10-12 °C to conserve energy. I am on a bird run as they are such wonderful creatures and I hope my paintings are the next best thing to having them with us.
